Many species found in the UK are protected by UK and EU law. Under these laws, it is an criminal offence, punishable by fines and imprisonment, to knowingly or unintentionally kill, injure or disturb these species. Local planning authorities are required to take into account the presence of protected species when considering planning consent.
Species currently protected by these laws currently include:
- Bats: 17 resident breeding species
- Great Crested Newt
- Reptiles: Grass Snake, Adder, Slow Worm, Smooth Snake, Common Lizard, Sand Lizard
- Water Vole
- White-clawed Crayfish
We undertake detailed surveys to to determine if a proposed development will have an impact on protected species. If protected species are associated with a proposed development, a European Protected Species (EPS) License, detailing appropriate mitigation, may be required. We apply for this license on your behalf and undertake all associated mitigation planning, implementation and monitoring.
